The R36T: Retro Vibes & a Bubble Screen – Is it Worth It? 🕹️
The Game Console R36T is the funky, retro-styled sibling to the K36 handheld. It’s aiming for a nostalgic look and feel, but does it deliver? Here’s the breakdown:
Retro Design Focus: The R36T really* leans into the 80s aesthetic with its unique curved screen (covered by a bubble-like plastic). Think old school pocket TVs! It’s visually distinct, though not perfect – angled views can distort the image.
- Specs are Solid (But Not Groundbreaking): Rockchip RK3326 CPU, 4GB RAM, WiFi, and a 3.5” 640×480 screen. It’s a familiar setup for handheld enthusiasts, but gets the job done.
- Controls are…Different: The D-pad is a circular pad, which surprisingly works well, but isn’t for everyone. It uses standard Switch Joy-Con sticks and clicky triggers.
Software Needs a Little Help: Comes with a custom Linux ROM & EmuElec. Strangely, CRT filters aren’t enabled by default, even though the device looks* like it’s begging for them. Easy to fix, but a weird omission.
- Who is it for? Not the best starting point for emulation newbies. But if you’re a handheld collector looking for something quirky and fun, the R36T could be a great addition. It’s a niche device that prioritizes style over pure performance.

Overall: The R36T isn’t perfect, but it’s a charming and interesting handheld that stands out from the crowd. It’s a bit of a novelty, but if you appreciate retro aesthetics, it might just be worth a look!
